Bilbao Port Ferry Overview
The Port of Bilbao is located on the Bilbao Abra bay, and along the Estuary of Bilbao, in Biscay. Also called Exterior Port and Superpuerto, the port complex occupies 773 acres of land and 4,186 acres of water along 17 km over 10 miles of waterfront. A new dock was built in Getxo to meet the increasing demand in cruise ship traffic, fed largely by the opening of the Guggenheim Museum Bilbao in 1998, which has brought in many more tourists and put Bilbao on the cruising routes. A P&O ferry service links the port of Bilbao in Spain with Portsmouth in England on board the Pride of Bilbao.
Bilbao, is the largest city in the Basque Country in northern Spain and the capital of the province of Biscay. The city has recently undergone major urban renewal, in order to move away from the region’s industrial history and instead focus on tourism and services. The developments are centered around the new metro system by Sir Norman Foster (see Metro Bilbao) and, most of all, the Guggenheim Bilbao Museum by Frank Gehry. A new tram line(EuskoTran) was introduced in 2002. The Port of Bilbao, formerly on the river, has been moved and expanded downstream on the Bay of Biscay, opening a great deal of central real estate on the river that has been the site of most of the new building. |
