There are currently 3 ferry services that operate between Scotland and Orkney. 2 routes are operated by Northlink Ferries with the other operated by Pentland Ferries. The services are as follows.
- Northlink Ferries operate routes between Scrabster and Stromness onboard the traditional ferry vessel MV Hamnavoe with a crossing time of 1 and a half hours.
- The second Northlink service operates between Aberdeen and Kirkwall. This long distance crossing is serviced by the other 2 Northlink Vessels, MV Hjaltland and MV Hrossey.
- The Pentland Ferries service operates between Gills Bay and St Margarets Hope and offers the quickest crossing to Orkney with an average duration of just 1 hour. Passenger services are now all served by Pentland Ferries new high speed catamaran ferry Pentalina.
