On the 6th of March 1939, the shareholders of AKTEL established HML - Hellenic Mediterranean Lines Co. by separating the activities of AKTEL into Domestic Services and the activities of HML into International Services.

Hellenic Mediterranean Lines offer ferries between Greece and the Greek Islands. Hellenic Mediterranean Lines offer ferries from Brindisi, Patras, Paxi, Zanti, Cefalonia and Corfu. In the Adriatic Sea, the first newly built passenger ferryboat (built in the year 1960), following an order by the Greek National Tourism Organisation, was the ship Egnatia owned by the Hellenic Mediterranean Lines Ferry, which operated the Patras - Igoumenitsa - Brindisi route.
