Savona Port Ferry Overview
Savona is a seaport and comune in the northern Italian region of Liguria, capital of the Province of Savona, in the Riviera di Ponente on the Mediterranean Sea. One of the most celebrated former inhabitants of Savona was the navigator Christopher Columbus, who farmed land in the area while chronicling his journeys. 'Columbus's house', a cottage situated in the Savona hills, lay between vegetable crops and fruit trees. It is just one of many residences in Liguria associated with Columbus.
After almost seven years of continuous growth in 2003 Savona launched its new Cruise Terminal. The modern terminal is just one of many locations for ferry services in Savona. Corsica Ferries passenger ferry operations are located at Vado Ligure which is further south along the coast from the main city Savona.
Savona has many sites of interest such as the Cappella Sistine, otherwise known as the famous Sistine Chapel, commissioned by Rovere Pope Sixtus IV. There is also the Sanctuary of Nostra Signora della Misericodia, also known as the sanctuary of Our Lady of Mercy. Another popular attraction in the city is in the neighbourhood of Savona where a house remains documented as property of Domenico Colombo, father of Christopher Columbus, where they lived for many years. |
