Dunkerque Port Ferry Overview
Dunkerque is located in northern France, 6 miles from the Belgian border. Dunkerque has the third largest harbour in France, after those of Le Havre and Marseille. From this harbour the only passenger service operates connecting Dunkerque to Dover in England. The service is offered by Norfolkline Ferries. It is also an industrial city, heavily dependent on the steel, food processing, oil refining, ship building and chemical industries.
As Norfolkline is the only ferry operator to run a passenger service from the port of Dunkerque, it means the port is far less busy. Many passengers prefer this route as it allows passengers to embark and disembark much more quickly than nearby Calais which is located just 30 miles away.
Dunkerque started life in the 8th century as a simple fishing harbour. It became famous as a haven for pirates who preyed on shipping in the North Sea - the most celebrated being the local hero, Jean Bart. Today's the dunes of Dunkerque make it a seaside resort. The city is remarkably green for a major international port and industrial centre, handling bulk cargoes from all over the world, as well as being a ferry port for cars and freight with many lorries crossing between the UK and Europe. |
