Bastia Port Ferry Overview
Bastia is a commune in the Haute-Corse department of France on the island of Corsica. It is the capital of the department. Bastia is also an important Corsican port and is famous for its wines. Situated in the northeast of Corsica, at the base of Cap Corse, Bastia is the principal port of the island and its principal commercial town.
It is close 73 miles from the Italian mainland at Livorno, and can be seen across the Tyrrhenian Sea from island of Elba. The old town (Terra Vecchia) is built in and around the central part of the harbour. The upper town (Terra Nuova) lies to the south, the modern town to the north and west. Bastia was the capital of Corsica until 1791 and still is military headquarters of the island.
Situated in the centre of the town, the port of Bastia is the number one Mediterranean port and the second French port for traffic, with 2 million passengers per year. There are several national and international ferry routes from Bastia, to Ajaccio, Genoa, Marseille, Nice, Livorno and Savona. It is very busy during the summer, and it is always best to book early. |
